Eco at St Vincents.

Who are the eco committee?

"We are a group of children from Years 3 to 6 who help the environment in everything we do. We have been meeting every other week after school to discuss new projects, new crafts and researching about different eco charities. In the past we have made bird feeders, created our school eco code, adopted our own endangered animal through WWF and even got our own green Blue Peter badge! In the future we would like to continue helping the environment through raising more money for WWF, creating a school eco bench and spreading easy and fun ways to make our school and our world a better place."

Eco crafts for at home:

Beverage bottle bird houses

All you need for this craft is a clean and empty plastic bottle, string, scissors, paint and bird feed.

1.      Grab a plastic bottle that is empty and clean it out. This could be a milk bottle, Coca-Cola bottle, or a juice carton.

2.      Cut a hole in in the bottle like in the picture. You can decide if you want to just cut one hole in the side, or have a hole going straight through both main sides of your bottle.

3.      Decorate it however you want. We find that painting it and then adding a layer of glue (which will dry clear!) works best, but you can also use permanent markers or stickers.

4.      Hang it up on a branch with strong string. This is the part where an adult may need to help you.

5.      Fill the bottom of the carton with bird seed for the birds to come and enjoy.

Seed balls:

All you will need is flour, soil, a mixing bowl, water, an empty egg carton and native British wildflower seeds.

1.      Mix ten parts soil to one part flour into your mixing bowl.

2.      Slowly add water and mix slowly with your hands until the mixture becomes sticky like a dough. Then, roll your soil dough into a golf-ball sized ball.

3.      Fill a tray with wildflower seeds and roll your mud balls around until they are covered in seeds. We recommend you gently place them into an egg carton to help with step number 4.

4.      Leave them to dry for a day or two and then they are ready to throw into your garden!

10 eco tips for at home:

1.      Turn Off the Tap
Don’t let water run while brushing teeth or washing hands—save every drop!

2.      Recycle Right
Learn what goes in the recycling bin and help sort items correctly at home.

3.      Turn Off the Lights
When you leave a room, flip the switch—saving energy is super easy!

4.      Use Both Sides of Paper
Draw or write on both sides of paper before recycling or reusing it.

5.      Pack Waste-Free Lunches
Use reusable lunch boxes, bottles, and containers—say goodbye to plastic wrap and disposable bags.

6.      Pick Up Litter
If you see trash on the ground (and it’s safe to pick up), put it in the proper bin.

7.      Take Care of Nature
Respect trees, plants, animals, and insects—nature is your playground and responsibility.

8.      Donate Old Toys and Clothes
Give gently-used items a second life by donating instead of throwing them away.

9.      Walk or Bike When You Can
If school or a friend’s house is nearby, walk, bike, or scooter instead of asking for a ride.

10. Learn and Share
Read books or watch videos about the environment, then teach friends and family what you know.

UN 17 sustainability goals

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, provides a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future. At its heart are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are an urgent call for action by all countries - developed and developing - in a global partnership. They recognize that ending poverty and other deprivations must go hand-in-hand with strategies that improve health and education, reduce inequality, and spur economic growth – all while tackling climate change and working to preserve our oceans and forests.

Every year, the UN Secretary General presents an annual SDG Progress report, which is developed in cooperation with the UN System, and based on the global indicator framework and data produced by national statistical systems and information collected at the regional level.
